Why you experience a weight loss plateau?

Simply put you are no longer in an energy deficit. We lose weight when we take in less energy than we burn, so our bodies have to used stored energy (fat loss). When we are no longer seeing any weight loss it means our energy intake (the food we eat) now matches how much energy we are expending this is sometimes referred to as our TDEE or total daily energy expenditure.

When we are dieting and we eventually reach this plateau it is because of something called metabolic adaptation. Our body doesn’t want to continually lose weight as left unchecked this would eventually result in death. Our bodies sense the energy deficit and through various mechanisms start to slow our metabolism down in order to prevent more weight loss. To lose more weight at this point you would need to either increase activity levels or reduce your calorie intake further.

This is why we preach a high protein diet and resistance training as these two factors can help in reducing the speed at which this metabolic adaptation occurs. It is also essential to hold onto your muscle mass in a calorie deficit and this is what resistance training and a high protein diet can help with.
