Why we need to talk about Peri-Menopause

In a survey done in 2022, it found that 7/10 women blamed menopause for the breakdown of their marriage. 67% of those surveyed reported it increased domestic abuse and arguments, yet sadly, only a fifth of those women sought support to talk about peri/menopause because they didn’t recognise it as a contributing factor.

80% said their symptoms put a strain on their children and or family life. Given that the average age of menopause is 51, and according to the Samaritans reports, the age group with the highest suicide rate for women is 50 to 54. We clearly need to improve not only our understanding of the menopause but also how we can help support women going through it and educate women on the signs and symptoms to look out for when they might be entering their perimenopausal period.

Menopause is not a disease; it is a natural and normal stage that all women go through, yet it is having such a negative effect on women. Just like your menstrual cycle, it is important to understand your body as best as possible in order to be able to understand and hopefully ease through the natural changes that your body is undergoing.

In the survey, only 1/3rd of women had been offered treatment or HRT to relieve their symptoms. Yet 65% of the women who were offered HRT said it had made positive impacts on their menopause-related symptoms. Improving the conversation with your healthcare options and the accessibility of HRT will hopefully help improve the mental and physical health for many women at this time in their lives.
