How long should you be using HRT?

HRT, or Hormone replacement therapy, is one of your greatest tools when it comes to managing the changes you go through in your perimenopause and in the post-menopause period. It can be started during the perimenopause period when your hormones start to fluctuate; at this time, it’s about topping them up. Alternatively, you can start it after you have reached menopause, where it is about replacing what you are no longer making. By replacing the missing hormones and correcting hormone deficiency it eases both the physical and psychological symptoms and helps to protect your long-term health.

Simply put, there is no set length of time you should take HRT for. As with most things female health-related, it is very person-dependent. You will have women who take it for years to help improve the worst symptoms of their menopause; some will find when they stop taking it, the symptoms return, and others will have no problem when they come off it. Because menopause is essentially a long-term hormone deficiency, it means that women can usually take it forever to replace their missing hormones.

It is important that you seek individualised advice from your doctor or another healthcare professional and discuss all the treatment options available to you. If your regular doctor or healthcare professional will not consider HRT for you, you may wish to find a doctor who has a more specialised interest in menopause.

We have developed a brand new programme especially for women experiencing Peri-Menopause. This programme is fantastic to use alongside HRT and helps to create a balanced lifestyle whilst navigating the changes of Peri-Menopause.
